american apparel truly had me in a CHOKEHOLD. all my money from my highschool job went to depop purchases to complete my “collection” of tennis skirts & crop tops. i’ve always wondered why la apparel hasn’t had the same effect whatsoever while essentially being the *exact* same brand 👀
omg i used to buy from depop too bc it was cheaper lolz its sooooo interesting to me because even i dont shop at la apparel although i always say i miss american apparel! i think the lack of stores has something to do w it too......
wow this was so well put together and thorough I loved reading this ! You really captured a moment in time. I teach high school and it’s funny how being “indie” was such a thing when I was younger, but my students seem totally unfamiliar with it. Maybe as a music genre but even just the idea of being anti-branding seems to be such a millennial thing…
omg thank u for reading n saying that! its funny too that now we (and younger gens) position ourselves with brands to create our identity instead, i guess quiet luxury was a small moment where we went back to anti-branding a bit but barely
The only thing that saved me from being a full on devotee was that I couldn't fit in a lot of their clothes women's wear 😅 but I scored a lot of AA band merch, and still have a few crop tops.
Girlcore before girlcore. Great exposé, thank you. I remember the era, as if all those parties featuring twenty-somethings in American Apparel were taking place just yesterday. And that’s all the way in Northern Europe, mind you.
love that u say that because i also written abt the origins of -girl n -core, also american apparel did have a world wide take over with its stores n the internet, even the joanna girl i mentioned is from poland!
Totally, they were everywhere. At the time international online shopping wasn’t there yet where it’s today so I always visited the physical stores when travelling and was sure to pick smth up. Anyways, do more research writing like these pls 💎🤍
I was one of those girls. Luckily, you didn't include any pictures of me in your post! I just remember being photographed while slathered in baby oil. They liked that I looked 12 years old. What a weird time. Tbh, I do miss all the free socks.
Omg I really enjoyed reading this!!!! Especially because I was on tumblr during the 2012 era. There was an American Apparel at the outlet mall that I worked at I’d go ALL the time trying on skin tight clothes 😂. I did not know that about the founder but I’m not surprised at all that he was a pervert/rapist
